Most people sell their old car, pocket the cash, and never think about it again — which is fair enough. But if you're curious, the journey your vehicle takes afterward is more interesting (and more useful) than most people realize. It's also a good way to understand why pricing works the way it does.

Step 1: Draining and de-polluting

Before anything else happens, the car is drained of fluids — engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuel, and AC refrigerant. These aren't just tipped out; they're collected and disposed of separately, because dumping them is both an environmental hazard and, in the UAE, against regulations. Batteries are also removed at this stage, since they contain materials that need separate handling.

Step 2: Parts recovery

This is where a lot of the actual value gets extracted. Anything still functional — engines, gearboxes, alternators, starters, doors, mirrors, working AC compressors, intact glass — gets pulled and tested. These parts don't just get thrown away; they typically re-enter the market through auto parts dealers, going on to repair someone else's vehicle rather than getting discarded. This is a big part of why a car with more intact components generally earns a better price than a stripped or badly damaged one.

Step 3: Fluids and hazardous materials handled separately

Tyres, for instance, don't get shredded along with the metal body — they're processed through separate recycling streams, sometimes turned into rubber granules used in flooring or playground surfacing. Airbags, if not already deployed, are handled with specific care due to the propellant they contain.

Step 4: The shell goes for shredding

Once anything reusable has been removed, what's left — the body shell, chassis, and remaining metal components — goes to a shredder. Industrial shredders reduce the vehicle to fist-sized chunks of metal within minutes. From there, magnets and other separation technology sort ferrous metal (steel and iron) from non-ferrous metal (aluminum, copper, and similar).

Step 5: Melting and reintroduction into the supply chain

The separated metal is sent to smelters, melted down, and turned into new steel and aluminum stock. This recycled metal doesn't just disappear into some abstract industrial process — it comes back as construction rebar, new vehicle parts, appliances, and countless other products. A meaningful share of "new" steel in circulation today actually started life as scrapped vehicles.

Understanding this chain explains a few things that might otherwise seem confusing:

  • Why a car with usable parts is worth more than one that's been stripped — because a working alternator has resale value on its own before anything gets shredded.

  • Why selling responsibly matters environmentally, not just financially — a car scrapped through a proper channel gets its hazardous materials handled correctly, instead of leaking into soil or water if it's just abandoned or dismantled informally.
